Easy Reading On The Go

I can’t stress enough on the importance of reading to build your vocabulary.

Now, another important thing, you have to make your reading session easy and fun! These two are the ingredients to make your reading practice keep going on a certain pace, if not getting faster, resulting in a higher comprehension. Reading comprehension qualifies your earned language skill, giving you a sense of achievement, and the real joy of acquairing a new language!

Like this post title says, in this post I want to talk about reading on the go, easily!

How? by using (free) e-books, audio books, and read aloud podcast and youtube channel. These resources are practicaly handy when you have free time, commuting, or multitasking. In my case, I have a one-and-half hour commute to my work, which I try to spend as much as possible for my language learning.

1. Find E-books you want to read

Recently, I am into reading classic Japanese Literature using an online library called aozora bunko. This is quite a big site filled with books which the copyright has already lapsed and made readily available to public. You can search using your favorit books’ title or your favorit writers. Once you find what you are looking for, you can open it in its browser mode of your device such as laptops, tablets, or smartphones.

If you find words you don’t understand, you can always highlight the word and search it on the spot!

Currently I am reading 人間失格, No Longer Human by Dazai Osamu.

2. pair the e-book with read aloud podcasts

The next thing I do is find a nice read aloud, called 朗読 in Japanese, of the book.

So while I am displaying the book on the browser, I am also playing the read aloud podcast of the book, so I can read while listening to it being read. In this way, I can always know how to pronounce new letter, while checking the meaning of new words.

This is how my reading on the go session looks like!

This book is read for around 4 hours, almost as long as my commute. So at the end of that day, I was feeling good that I finished one book in one go!
